concept, process, choreographic composition, direction: Peggy Baker
rehearsal director: Katherine Semchuk
movement invention: Peggy Baker with the dancers
music: Michael Harrison for Room Full of Teeth from Just Constellations: No. 1; Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld / The Sun Roars into View from Never Were the Way She Was; Sarah Neufeld / Unreflected from Detritus
performance: Katie Ayer, Abby Hanson, Ellen Moore, Maya Santos O’Keefe, Isey Schaffer-Hooper or Rajvi Dedhia
I am profoundly affected by the kinetic splendour, the intimacy, and the dramatic power of dance; the architecture of choreography; the transformative potency of performance; the immediacy of an audience. I am a proponent of dance embodied as vivid, nuanced, authentic physicality, expressed within unique and resonant choreographic structures. I take my inspiration from systems of information (science, mathematics), and from creation in other forms (visual art, music, poetry, literature), while pursuing an expanding and deepening practice in dance. I take as my subject the quandary of individual consciousness in relation to the mysteries of life: who do we discover ourselves to be – and who do we aspire to become – in relation to the people, events and circumstances that frame, influence, inspire, provoke, and challenge us?
This dance asks each of the five performers to attune themselves to one another with sensitivity and empathy; to patiently hold stillness; to delineate pathways of dynamic action through the interior of their bodies and among one another in space; to rise to the ever-shifting demands of kinetic specificity through clearly focused intention. This is a dance that cultivates attention to gravity, proximity, breath, listening, physical contact, and the orchestration of actions achieved through shared objectives. It is a dance about ‘being’ and ‘doing’ together. PB

On the first day with these dancers, I asked each of them to respond to two questions: “What are the current preoccupations in your dance practice?” and “What are you carrying?” I took notes as each person spoke, and then reordered their words as individual text scores that all shared a common thread contributed by Marina Mendez, “My practice is not just my body, it’s my whole life.” Each of the dancers worked from their own text score with the objective of fully inhabiting their body and the interior space that has held their life over the past year. The text delivered by the dancers is all drawn from this quote, but the meaning is buried in the action so that the sonic quality takes precedence:
« Je crois que chacun espère d’une oeuvre un sens à la vie. La suggestion finale, la déclaration finale, ne doit pas être une déclaration délibérée mais une déclaration impuissante. Elle doit être ce qu’on ne peut éviter de dire. » Jasper Johns (Peintre américain né en 1930)
“I think that one wants from a painting a sense of life. The final suggestion, the final statement, has to be not a deliberate statement but a helpless statement. It has to be what you can’t avoid saying.” - Jasper Johns (American painter, born 1930)

This work was inspired by the writing of Henri Michaux, a multidisciplinary artist in the Belgian avant-garde active from 1927 to 1984. Michaux’s description of his wild and unhinged style sounds more like painting or choreography than writing: “Quickly thrown out, in jerks, in and across the page, interrupted sentences – their syllables flying, shredded, torn apart, would go charging, diving, dying. Their remaining tatters would revive, shoot out again, streak across the page, explode once more. Their letters ended in smoke or disappeared in zigzags.” The text delivered by the dancers is drawn from Michaux’s writing, but the meaning is buried in the action so that the sonic quality takes precedence. The music by Gaétan Lebœuf is an excerpt from the score for loin, très loin, a full-evening solo choreographed for me by Paul-André Fortier in 1999. PB

These are original songs written in the style of traditional Greek and Arabic music. The lyrics are Esperanto, the artificial pan-European language created in the late nineteenth century and idealistically envisioned as a universal tongue. Julio Lumo means July light, la lumiere de juillet. The central image for the dance is a walled Middle-Eastern garden: flowers, trees, birds, rich colour and fragrance under the canopy of heaven. It evokes the geometry of stonework, the grace of Arabic script, wonder and exaltation at the expression of the divine in the multiplicity of life. Julio Lumo is dedicated, with great love, to my husband’s family: his parents, his siblings, his daughter and her children. PB
