Phyllis Whyte
dancer

A dancer with ‘lucid brilliance’ (Alina Gilder, The Globe and Mail), Phyllis Whyte has choreographed and taught since 1970 and created dance films since 2002. In all these capacities, she has had the honour to work with Toronto Dance Theatre, Murray Darroch, Nadia Pavlochenko, Maxine Heppner, Karen and Allen Kaeja, Peter Chin, Tom Brouillette, and Julia Sasso, among others.

Ms Whyte has created documentaries about Contemporary Canadian choreographers: Andrea Nann, Heidi Strauss, William Yong, Carol Anderson, Susie Burpee, and Sylvie Bouchard. Choreographing and dancing in her own ScreenDances and those directed by Laurence Siegel has taken her from Yokohama Japan, to Victoria BC, to Budapest Hungary. Her choreography and performance is featured in the award winning film, Breath Taking (created with Sherry LeBlanc and Vickie Fagan, with music by Cheng-Fen Lin), which has been screened worldwide and won the short film category in Singapore, Miami, Cannes, Berlin and several Indian festivals.

As adept at teaching on Zoom as in person, Ms Whyte regularly conducts workshops for dance students in Toronto and Tokyo.
