Meryem Alaoui
dancer

Meryem Alaoui is a dancer-choreographer from Morocco, living in Toronto. A graduate of the School of Toronto Dance Theatre, she has danced for choreographers Amanda Acorn, Angela Blumberg, Antony Hamilton (with the company Dancemakers), and Karen Kaeja (Kaeja d’Dance), among others. She founded Jasad Dance Projects to increase the visibility and representation of dance artists from the MENA region. Influenced by her studies of Body-Mind Centering®, her work is often an invitation towards a softer, more sensorial and felt experience of dance. Her choreographic work has been shown in Ontario (Summerworks, Harbourfront Centre, Dancemakers Centre for Creation, PS: We Are All Here, Dance Matters, Dance Made in Canada, Hamilton Fringe Festival), Quebec (Tangente) and Morocco (Théâtre National Mohammed V). She has taught Body-Mind Centering® workshops at Toronto Dance Theatre, the University of Calgary, Postmarginal Edmonton, le HIBA_Lab as well as independently in Toronto. Meryem has also been involved in community and arts-education projects with Arts Etobicoke, Haneen – a Syrian women’s choir, Dreamwalker Dance and The Arab Community Centre of Toronto.
