Sylvain Brochu
dancer

Sylvain Brochu was born and raised in Sherbrooke Quebec. His career began in the early eighties' burgeoning Montreal dance scene. A performer and educator of great range and vision, he went on to dance with several Canadian dance companies including Toronto’s Dancemakers, Montreal’s Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault, Vancouver’s EDAM and Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers, to name a few. Over time, Sylvain collected a solo repertoire of impressive eclecticism including solos by Conrad Alexandrowicz, Tedd Robinson and Peggy Baker among others. As a dance teacher he has taught with empathy and mindfulness to a wide range of students from teens to adults in settings spanning from recreational to universities. Since 2000, he has been steadily deepening his practice and teaching of yoga. Thanks to the support of the Dancer Transition Resource Centre, Sylvain completed a shiatsu practitioner training program in 2006 and has had a successful practice ever since. He currently resides on the Sunshine Coast of BC, where he pursues his passion for gardening and singing while enjoying semi-retirement.

For Peggy Baker Dance Projects: Sylvain commissioned Peggy to create the work that would become Yang. He performed the duet version with Shannon Conney in 2003 as part of The Choreographer’s Trust. Sylvain also danced in the 2010 Nuit Blance durational performance Aleatoria.
